5S STEPS

1. Sort

1. Sort

Separate tools required, materials, and instructions from those that are not needed. Remove everything that is not necessary from the work-area.
2. Set In Order

2. Set In Order

Sort and organize all tools, equipment, files, data, material, and resources for quick, easy location, and use. Label all storage locations, tools, and equipment.
3. Shine

3. Shine

Set new standards for cleanliness. Clean and remove all trash, grease, and dirt. Everything must be clean, tidy, and neatly put in its appropriate place. Cleanliness provides a safe work-area and makes potential problems noticeable, e.g. equipment leaks, loose parts, missing guards, loose paperwork, materials
4. Standardize

4. Standardize

Engage the workforce to systematically perform steps 1, 2, & 3 above daily, to maintain the workplace in perfect condition as a standard process. Establish schedules and set expectations for adherence.
5. Sustain

5. Sustain

Make 5S part of your culture, and incorporate it into the corporate philosophy. Build organizational commitment so that 5S becomes an organizational “value” or expectation so everyone develops 5S as a habit. Integrate the 5S methodology into the performance management system.

5S IMPLEMENTATION

  • QE/5S
One of the methods of determining an organizations approach to its business is to evaluate its workplace organization capability & visual management standards.
  • 5S Steps
5S engages people through the use of 'Standards' and ‘Discipline'.It is not just about housekeeping, but concentrating on maintaining the standards & discipline to manage the organization - all achieved by upholding & showing respect for the Gemba [workplace] every day.
  • 5S Philosophy
We create our philosophy to make our team understand better and implemented efficiently.
  • 5S Committee Chart
5S relates to workplace organization and forms a solid foundation upon which many organizations base their drive for continuous improvement. It is equally applicable & successful in all sectors helping to achieve high impact results. Herewith the 5S Organization Chart.
  • 5S Logo
One of the 5S activity is Logo Design Competition organized by promotion committee to create and outstanding image of centre.
  • 5S Gantt Chart
Arts and Culture Centre also make a Gantt Chart as a timeline that is used as a project management tool to illustrate how the project will run. You can view individual tasks, their durations and the sequencing of these tasks. View the overall timeline of the project and the expected completion date.
  • Before

In the first one-day session, employees should look forward to and be expected to meet the first 3S requirements:

1.Take a picture of the current status of your workplace.Sort: Separate anything that is needed and necessary from what is not needed.

2.Organize the things you need so that there is a place for everything and everything has a place. You should be able to find anything in under 30 seconds (Set in order).

3.Clean the workplace and get rid of things that make it difficult to maintain cleanliness, such as boxes on the floor that prevent you from being able to clean the entire surface–store them in drawers, instead.

4.(Shine)Prepare an action plan for the stuff that you cannot arrange that day, but will be able to in the near future. As a means of disposal, you could consider selling them on the marketplace, have someone pick them up for free, or schedule a review as a reminder.Take a second picture after the entire day’s work, for review.

  • After
During the second one day session, two weeks later, employees should take a third picture and compare it to the first two shots. You may set-up peer audits to check how the 5S principles are being met and to ensure the plan is moving forward. Define together ways to standardize the improvements though time: organize cleaning schedules, define roles and responsibilities, and prepare written procedures or diagrams to help everyone remember what to do.

“5S is an approach for workplace organizations; it drives workplace efficiency and productivity improvement. Based on a simple set of principles, it not only helps to identify wastes in the workplace but also creates an environment wherein teams get involved in improvements. It is a movement to make sure that all the elements of a "workplace system" function in harmony in order to allow teams to deliver an optimum level of performance.”

“The brilliance of 5S is that it can be adopted by all throughout an organization. There are no burdens of complicated tools or difficult data analysis. 5S is a set of practices that needs to be practiced everyday until it becomes a habit. Whether it is a CEO or a janitor, everyone should practice 5S. As a matter of fact, when you embark on a 5S deployment, your organization should first have the CEO adopt this tool and apply it to his or her office.”

“Some think that 5S cannot be applied in a paperless office. This is not true. The 5S principles can also be used in the virtual space. The IT space is a great candidate for 5S deployment. Whether it’s investment banking, healthcare, hospitality, government, retail banking, information technology or education, 5S is applicable everywhere.”
